Inspiration hit and this was the second set of art songs completed for Matt Daniels.  This set, along with Three Shakespeare Sonnets, was also the topic of Matt's doctoral dissertation/lecture recital and you can read more about that by clicking here!

I. Poem XVII, More Poems (1922)

Bells in tower at evening toll,
And the day forsakes the soul;
Soon will evening's self be gone
And the whispering night come on.

Blame not thou the blinded light
Nor the whisper of the night:
Though the whispering night were still,
Yet the heart would counsel ill.

II. Poem XXVI, Last Poems (1922)

The half-moon westers low, my love,
And the wind brings up the rain;
And wide apart lie we, my love,
And seas between the twain.

I know not if it rains, my love,
In the land where you do lie;
And oh, so sound you sleep, my love,
You know no more than I.

III. Poem IV, Additional Poems (1939)

It is no gift I tender,
A loan is all I can;
But do not scorn the lender;
Man gets no more from man.

Oh, mortal man may borrow
What mortal man can lend;
And 'twill not end to-morrow,
Though sure enough 'twill end.

If death and time are stronger,
A love may yet be strong;
The world will last for longer,
But this will last for long
